Academy of Kung Fu students lead girls' workshop at
Jillian Perkins and Lara Hubschmitt, Academy of Kung Fu students, accompanied by Sifu Kyle Alexander, recently introduced Mo Duk Pai Kung Fu to the Girls' Empowerment Group at Buckman Elementary School. The SUN School, run by graduate students of social work, manages the lunchtime group to provide elementary-age girls with educational and empowering experiences. Knowing Lara through Buckman Elementary (she's a student teacher!), they invited Mo Duk Pai to conduct workshops for their students during two of their sessions, Feb 11 and Feb 13 2003.
The girls learned some kung fu basics, and were excited to practice their kicks into the air shields- and whoohoo, could some of them kick! They did a great job, some even graduating into six-count street by the end of the 45-minute workshop. The women managing the program participated as well, and enjoyed the workout. A number of girls took home flyers and brochures, their interest in martial arts piqued by the workshop.
